News of the Week
Innovation: There Is a New Way to Reduce Climate Footprint.
Deponigas ApS and Danish Crown have pioneered a green technology that significantly reduces methane emissions from slurry tanks by converting methane to CO2, slashing the climate impact by over 95%. This collaboration has led to the creation of AgroGas, aiming to spread this solution across the agricultural sector and marking a significant advance in sustainable agriculture.
This method, integral to the GUDP project LESS, effectively seals slurry tanks and actively collects methane for conversion, showcasing its efficiency almost year-round. It represents Denmark's initiative in developing climate-friendly technologies and aligns with Danish Crown's commitment to sustainable meat production.
This move signals a decisive step towards a more sustainable agricultural future, showcasing the tangible benefits of innovative environmental management and positioning us at the forefront of the green transformation in agriculture.
Nort America Processed Meat Market Growth is Not Slowing Down.
The North America processed meat market, valued at $26.40 billion in 2020, is projected to grow at a 3.5% annual rate from 2021 to 2028. This growth stems from increased demand for convenient food and rising incomes, particularly among working professionals. COVID-19 disruptions caused shortages and price increases due to outbreaks in meat processing facilities, affecting supply chains and factory closures.
The U.S., leading in meat consumption since 2017, sees this demand fueled by urbanization and lifestyle shifts. Meat intake (includes beef, pork, turkey and chicken) per American has been increasing by year, with a heightened focus on protein. Market growth is further propelled by innovative and demographic-targeted products, such as gender-specific snacks. For example: Benny’s original meat straws, Tillamook Country Smoker’s.
A growing preference for processed over traditional meat, driven by the fast-paced lifestyle and a surge in gym-goers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, reflects an increased demand for protein and nutritional awareness.
Did you know? 🔖
I recently found out about the Flexitarian diet.
Did you know that Flexitarianism is a balanced dietary philosophy that leans heavily towards plant-based foods while still welcoming occasional servings of meat and other animal products.
It's a flexible eating style that encourages a foundation of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, and plant proteins, with the freedom to occasionally enjoy meat and fish.
The diet not only diversifies the plate but also supports a transition towards more plant-centric eating without demanding absolute adherence.
The image below conveys key insights on dietary choices and environmental impact:
1. Environmental Impact: An Oxford study found that if the UK's heavy meat-eaters reduced their intake, it would significantly lower carbon emissions, akin to removing 8 million cars from roads.
2. Industry Criticism: The meat industry disputed the study, labeling its findings as simplistic.
3. Acknowledgment of Issues: There's a recognized link between meat production and environmental harm, underscored by data on deforestation and land use for animal feed.
4. Shift to Plant-Based Diets: Consumer trends show a growing preference for plant-based diets, including flexitarianism, influenced by environmental concerns.
5. Flexitarianism in Europe: A Statista survey revealed varied adoption of flexitarianism across Europe, with Greece showing the highest rates and Eastern Europe the lowest, indicating regional dietary trends.
This streamlined summary focuses on the main findings about meat consumption's environmental effects, industry reaction, and the rise of flexitarianism, particularly in Europe.
